One way that River City Cabinets has shortened production time in building cabinets and kept control of costs is by putting standards in place. One of the ways the shop, located in Austin, Tex., makes measuring easy is by having small pre-measured blocks in every assembly and machining area. If an employee needs to quickly measure a door for hinge placement, for example, he can pull the wood block, which has been pre-measured to exact sizes, with the size marked on it and use it as a quick measuring device. More traditional measuring tapes are used of course, but this method is quick, accurate and readily available.
Using marked wood blocks premeasured to standard commonly used sizes makes jobs like hinge placement quick and easy.

Randy Hardin and Duane Eller, owners of River City Cabinets, believe that it's smart to keep some of the pieces that they use on a regular basis cut and ready to use, because it saves a lot of time. For example, when a face frame requires enhancement, pieces are cut and stored directly below the face frame area. The assembler just pulls a pre-cut piece and attaches it.

Face frame additions are stored below the face frame table for use when needed. Since these pieces are used fairly regularly and are a standard, it's important to keep them handy.
